Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education
Description of Department: The Curriculum & Instruction Department has been a central part of the college's history since 1861, when the first programs in elementary education were offered. The department consists of 25 full-time faculty, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in childhood education, adolescence education, TESOL education, literacy education and special education. New programs designed to meet the high-quality teacher certification standards of New York State - coupled with the School of Education's national accreditation, a variety of professional development school initiatives, strong collaboration with Arts & Sciences faculty, and a supportive administrative team - make SUNY Oswego an exciting place to build a successful career. The Department of Curriculum & Instruction at the State University of New York at Oswego invites applications for a tenure track position as Assistant Professor in Mathematics Education.

Review Date: Review of applications will begin November 1, 2024, and will continue until the position is filled.

Compensation: Salary to commensurate with experience and hiring rank plus full New York State benefits package.

Description of Responsibilities: The Assistant Professor of Mathematics will teach undergraduate and graduate mathematics methods courses in both the Childhood Education 1-6 and Adolescence Education 7-12 programs; supervise mathematics education candidates in field experiences; provide program and academic advisement; participate in program recognition and School of Education program review; and serve on department, School of Education, and university committees.

In addition, the Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education will be expected to display a demonstrated excellence in teaching and scholarship potential, commitment to undergraduate and graduate education, and possess communication and interpersonal skills to effectively work with a diverse array of students and colleagues.

Job Requirements:
Required Qualifications:
  • Doctorate in Mathematics Education or related field with Master's degree in Mathematics Education or related field). ABD will be considered with degree completion within 2 years.
  • A minimum 3 years teaching experience as a mathematics educator in K-12 schools and commitment to promote equity in schools and support all students' abilities to succeed in a multicultural and global community.
  • Demonstrated ability to design instruction in alignment with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards with a focus on interdisciplinary and authentic learning.
  • Understanding and implementation of the School of Education Conceptual Framework with an emphasis on teaching for Social Justice.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Sustained teaching experience as a mathematics educator in K-12 schools with professional emphasis on teaching for social justice, collaboration, and interdisciplinary learning.
  • Knowledge and experience in integrating mathematics with other STEM fields.
  • Experience with supervision and school partnerships.
  • Higher education teaching experience.
  • Experience delivering professional development sessions for mathematics educators or other educators.
